Tempur-Pedic advertising tries to tie it to aspirations. They claim that using their products will make you healthier.

Larger, more luxurious mattresses are selling well, too, as new houses get bigger.

Derek Nighbor, vice-president national affairs for the Retail Council of Canada, believes the price difference between Canada and U.S. stores has been exaggerated and when borders delays and the cost of travel are added, it's just not worth it.
Nighbor cites a recent CBC report for which a professional shopper was hired to buy goods in Montreal, then in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and found only a $50 difference in a basket of goods.
'I think a lot of customers have been conditioned to look for the best deal, it is part of being a savvy Canadian shopper, but right now I think there is a lot of confusion,' said Nighbor.
And when there is a real price difference, it exists for a reason, he added.
