'We were able to get a really good laptop computer for my friend's boyfriend for $400,' Ryan said, warming up at the nearby Starbucks Coffee after it opened at 3:30 a.m. 'I also got a laptop computer for my parents. Since I waited that long, I figured I might as well get two.'

Luggage rolled out of Kohl's at a fairly steady clip, accompanied by pillow-top mattress pads and enough kitchen appliances to start a restaurant.

Haven Fletcher of Cincinnati, visiting in-laws in Cedar Rapids, stopped by Starbucks for some 'go juice' before she headed to Kohl's.

'My family thinks I'm crazy to get up at this hour,' said Fletcher with a laugh. She has made the Black Friday trek in Cedar Rapids two years in a row.

Nelda Dierickx of Durant was standing in a long, winding line outside Target at Coral Ridge Mall, waiting in the frigid cold for the store to open at 6 a.m.

Once I was vertical, with a healthy baby in my arms and the freedom to choose any literary genre I pleased, I found that all I wanted to do was write more essays.

What had happened in that broken elevator - or, to return to a more conventionally romantic location, on that cosy mattress? I've already mentioned the essay's combination of limited size and unlimited perspective - the microcosm/macrocosm duality that inspired William Hazlitt's essay On Great and Little Things as well as the title of my current essay collection, At Large and At Small. I was also captivated by the inherently experimental nature of the genre. It's no accident that Montaigne, holed up in his tower in Aquitaine (a sort of 16th-century double mattress), chose to name his new literary form the essaie - in other words, an attempt or trial rather than a finished product. When he was writing about idleness, constancy, fear, friendship, pedantry, moderation, cruelty, presumption, anger, vanity, and sleep - among dozens of other subjects - he never gave the impression that he was being definitive. He was noodling around, hazarding guesses, having fun.

According to Salina police reports, a 50-inch plasma TV valued at $3,000 was stolen Thursday night from a home in the 300 block of Gail Drive. A basement window was broken.

The night before $1,600 worth of sporting goods -- golf clubs, softball bats, gloves -- as well as an XM radio and an air mattress were stolen from a home in the 100 block of North Second Street.
