Ja-nice is now on the waiting list for a kidney. But in the meantime, Martin prepares her for dialysis each night.

A catheter stretches from Ja-nice's tiny stomach and is connected to a large plastic bag and to the dialysis machine next to the air mattress she uses as a bed. While she sleeps, dialysis fluid cycles through her body to clean her blood.

Each morning, Martin tries to wake up by 6 a.m. to unhook the machine before making breakfast for her five children and shuttling the four boys off to school.

TERRE HAUTE - The Environmental Protection Agency has conducted a new study regarding the possible connection between polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE - a flame retardant chemical added to various household products) and an increase in hyperthyroidism in cats. This study, published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology in August, confirmed that some housecats had high levels of PBDEs. Although the evidence was not conclusive, it is possible that PBDEs may increase the risk of hyperthyroidism in cats. PBDE's have been a concern for years as a potential health risk for humans, particularly relating to the nervous and reproductive systems. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers is a flame retardant commonly used in the manufacture of household products such as upholstery, carpets and mattresses. Pocketed coils are individual steel inner-spring coils encapsulated in pockets. These are then attached to form the mattress. Because the springs are not interconnected there is more motion separation than conventional inner-spring mattresses. All top rated pocketed coil mattresses use high-tempered steel coils. Additionally, each mattress manufacturer has unique design points that separate them from their competitors. Pocketed coil mattresses are also married together with a variety of materials such as, latex, silk or wool fibres or memory foam, which gives each mattress an unique feel of support and comfort.

Jamison Pocketed Coil Mattress

Jamison marries its pocketed coils to a variety of materials including Talalay Latex, Temperature Sensitive Memory Foam, or Omalon, each one offering the consumer different comfort requirements. Unlike other manufacturers Jamison has joined the coil pockets at the center creating a 'free-floating system' that, it claims, provides 100% coil conformity. The company also claims that the Jamison pocket coil mattress has 27% more support in the center zone than its competitors where you body needs it most giving you correct spinal alignment. There are many manufactures of pocketed coil mattresses and whether you really do get 27% more support than other mattresses on the market is debatable

Pay-as-you-go-phones are the mobile of choice for those preferring to stay dark because they offer a larger degree of anonymity than those involving a contract and bill. You do not need to provide proof of identity when you buy them or when you top them up. In all cases, the best way to avoid being tracked is to switch your mobile off as much as possible between calls, and remove the battery. For those who can afford it, of course, the safest option is to buy a half a dozen pay-as-you-go phones at a time, register them all in different names and dispose of them after use. The rest of us might just have to settle for using a pay phone - if we can find one.
AVOID HAVING YOUR MOVEMENTS TRACKED
With more than five million CCTV cameras across the country, the only way you can avoid being watched as you go about your daily business is to move to St Kilda or to wear a veil a la Michael Jackson's children. Driving a car with tinted windows might help motorists maintain their anonymity in the short-term (although the law states front windows must allow 70% of light through, and tinted makes you look like a drug dealer)

Firefighters were called around 11:10 p.m. to an eight-unit apartment building at 1225 N. Third Ave., said Tom Leslie, Wausau Fire Department battalion chief. Firefighters removed the burning mattress and mattress pad from a first-floor apartment before the fire spread, he said.

Apartment residents were evacuated from the building because of the smoke, which was heaviest on the first floor, Leslie said.

Barton and another man in the apartment were transported to a local hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, Leslie said. Barton, who had been drinking, was held in jail until he was sober, Kolb said.

GENEROUS friends, family and colleagues of a former moto-cross star have raised £4,000 in his memory to help others.

The funds raised in memory of Lawrence Bird will be used to buy specialist beds to allow more terminally-ill patients to also spend their last days at home with their families.

Mr Bird, of Rushmere St Andrew, Ipswich, died after a long fight with bone and liver cancer on July 1 but was able to spend his last days at home with his wife Sarah and 26-year-old son Aston thanks to an electric air mattress donated by Suffolk Community Equipment Services.

After his death Mrs Bird set up a fund to raise money to help others in a similar situation and raise awareness that there was such a service.

After collecting £4,000 Mrs Bird was able to make a presentation at the Bluebird Lodge centre, Ipswich, yesterday.

The money was enough to buy two beds, complete with electric air mattress and syringe drives. Mrs Bird said she was “overwhelmed” as the amount was £1,000 more than anticipated.

She said: “It is a lovely tribute to Lawrence, who was very much respected and well liked by all who knew him.

“My dad, John Rush, sadly died of cancer eight years ago in St Elizabeth Hospice and it is a wonderful place, but it was so important to us to have Lawrence at home.”

She said the loan bed allowed her husband to die peacefully and with dignity and thanked everyone who had helped to raise the money.

While the garage itself is tough and rugged, the trailer side is comfortable and accommodating. Above the hitch is the bedroom with a full-sized queen bed featuring a pillow-top mattress thanks to the generous slide. Fortunately, amongst the large group of tourists at the scene was a doctor from Brisbane who safely got the injured man out of the water and onto a flat surface before cushioning the man with towels to keep him immobilized before help arrived.

The Energex rescue chopper arrived to find the man in a great deal of pain.

Crew treated the man on scene before loading him onto a vacuum mattress - a specially designed air mattress for people suffering suspected spinal injuries that moulds to the patients shape to main immobility.

The injured man was then airlifted to Bundaberg Base Hospital.

“He was certainly lucky a doctor was on hand,” said rescue chopper crewman Gary Craig.

“Fraser Island is a fantastic place to see, but visitors need to understand that warning signs are there to prevent people getting hurt”

An Energex helicopter spokesperson said it was the second such incident in the past couple of weeks with authorities urging people to take more care, or risk permanent spinal damage.

Meanwhile, the chopper was also involved in a search and rescue operation near Kin Kin today

As always, P.J. The mattress was not very clean. But neither was I.'

Peter Golenbock tugged at my sleeve in his book 'Wild, High and Tight' (St. Martin’s Press), a masterful biography of former New York Yankees baseball player and manager, the mercurical Billy Martin, when he began: 'Billy Martin was driving, despite everything written to the contrary. It was Christmas Day 1989, and as he sat behind the wheel of his Ford F250 four-wheel drive three-quarter ton pickup truck, he was heading back to his farm just outside Binghamton, New York, to celebrate a holiday he hated with a wife he despised, except when they were in bed together.'

But perhaps my favorite lead in the lot was found, as you might have guessed, in the memoirs of an erudite talking dawg. In his delightful book, 'A Dog’s Life,' published by Alfred A

metropolitan mattress store as High Point Market Draws Top Designers and Their New Furniture Lines

New collections typically reach retail showrooms in about six months.

The market offers a glimpse at coming styles and trends. In fabric, look for the gray palette to grow; showrooms featured grays from light - call it a honey smoke - to dark charcoal. Many woods were weathered.

'It's almost as if furniture was exposed to the elements, then brought back in,' said Rupal Mamtani of importer Bluefish Home.

The fall market concluded last weekend. Other highlights:

Hooker Furniture, a Virginia company, introduced an innovative adjustable headboard. You can raise or lower it in 2-inch increments to complement mattress thickness, ceiling height and the scale of bedside tables and other furnishings.

The headboard will be available in four styles, two painted and two upholstered, and sell for $499 in queen size, said Hooker spokeswoman Kim Shaver.

Sam Moore, a company that Hooker recently bought, plans to offer headboards upholstered in 500 of the company's fabrics. Those headboards will be adjustable, too, and will sell for about $999.

Green - as in environmentally friendly - shapes more and more furniture styles and marketing.

Bernhardt, a Lenoir company, introduced its first eco-friendly collection called 'Cascade.' The company cut waste, used fewer volatile finishes and chose woods from sustainable sources, said LeAnna Graves, director of advertising. The 61-piece collection features rustic walnut veneers and such unusual touches as skeletal tree leaves under glass and river pebbles imbedded in table tops.

While Jordan said every family Mustard Seed helps has a story, some affect Mustard Seed's employees more than others.

'The ones that really get me are the ones who come in with their little kids,' Jordan said.

One boy in particular stands out in Jordan's memories. He was about 5 years old, and she first saw him as he sat in the waiting area with his family.

'He sat there just like a little angel,' Jordan said.

Then the family was led to the storage room, where the boy, who had been sleeping on a crib mattress on the floor, saw his new bed.

Jordan said the boy's face lit up, and he said, 'I'm getting me a new bed.'

The group, which aims to help people rebuild their lives after personal disasters like fires or financial troubles, was fashioned off a Florida organization by the same name.

Jordan said Mustard Seed opened in March 2002 and serves Allen, Adams, Wells, Huntington, Whitley, Noble and DeKalb counties.

'What's unique about Mustard Seed is we help Fort Wayne,' Jordan said. 'We help our neighbors.'

This holiday season, like other organizations, Mustard Seed is in need of community support to collect the items they use to help the needy.

The organization wants furniture that is free of rips, stains and pet hair, including bed frames, mattress sets, dressers, couches, chairs, lamps, coffee tables, end tables, kitchen or dining room tables and chairs

Scott Telles said.

Millard told police that Kizer had hit her several times on the back of the head and she required medical attention, so she was taken to the hospital emergency room.

Kizer went to jail on suspicion of spousal abuse and child endangerment, and Child Protective Services staff took the couple's three small children into custody.

Police plan to file a report with the district attorney recommending Millard also be charged with child endangerment.

Earlier Thanksgiving Day before police were called, Telles said, the couple's 5-year-old daughter called friends of the family to report that her parents were sleeping on a mattress in the middle of the living room.

The little girl said she, her 4-year-old sister and her 19-month-old brother had not eaten yet, Telles said.

The friends picked up the two older children, took them to safety and returned to the home to tell Kizer and Millard that their behavior was unacceptable, Telles said.

'They began fighting, and that's when we were called,' Telles said.

Police and Child Protective Services were keeping their eyes on the household before Thursday's arrest, Telles said.

'(Kizer and Millard) were given fair warning this might happen,' Telles said. Someone called police a few months ago to report the living conditions at their house were unacceptable, he said. Police responded, took a report, and got CPS involved, he said.

When CPS staff visited the house, they also told the parents to clean up the house, Telles said.

'There was the mattress on the floor, clothes all over the floor, food drying on the kitchen countertops, the dishes weren't done,' Telles said. '(Kizer and Millard) both admitted they are alcoholics.'

The incident on Thanksgiving was the last straw, Telles said, and taking the children away was the last resort in trying to get the couple to clean up their act.

'It's a difficult decision as a law enforcement officer to make,' said Telles, who has two daughters. 'But our primary interest is the kids' safety. It's the parents who have the problem, but the kids need to be safe.'

Domestic violence and neglect often increases around the holidays, Telles said.

'This is a time to celebrate, but for the families who don't have the means or the money to do that, they get depressed and will typically turn to drug or alcohol abuse, which then goes into these child endangerment issues.'

Kizer, Millard and others with substance abuse problems have to want to change, he said, and losing their kids may inspire that change.

'I hope this unfortunate experience causes these parents to change their ways and do what's best for the kids,' Telles said.

state and local fire investigators have ruled out arson as the cause of a three cause of a three-alarm fire that decimated a mattress store in Claremont's mill district Sunday night.

Fire officials and investigators from the state Fire Marshal's Office spent yesterday combing through debris searching for clues to the cause of the blaze, which is now considered accidental. However, the cause remains undetermined, according to a news release.

A significant propane gas explosion occurred at the Mattress Factory Outlet, a mattress manufacturer and retail store that occupied the brick building on Main Street, the news release said, but investigators were unable to determine whether the propane explosion was the cause or a result of the fire. The store was heated with propane.

Firefighters received an initial report of flames shooting through the front of the building around 7:45 p.m
