Ja-nice is now on the waiting list for a kidney. But in the meantime, Martin prepares her for dialysis each night.
A catheter stretches from Ja-nice's tiny stomach and is connected to a large plastic bag and to the dialysis machine next to the air mattress she uses as a bed. While she sleeps, dialysis fluid cycles through her body to clean her blood.
Each morning, Martin tries to wake up by 6 a.m. to unhook the machine before making breakfast for her five children and shuttling the four boys off to school.
